Symbols and Miss Lonely Hearts Empty Symbols and Miss Lonely Hearts

Post  Christian Galario Tue Dec 04, 2012 8:01 pm

"Miss Lonely Hearts:She represents the possibility to Jeff of the loneliness of being without someone to love. She enacts the pathetic possibilities of being alone--fantasy dinner, picking up a jerk, suicide. Here potentially tragic story is converted to comedy in the end. She and the Musician get together. The theme song, "Lisa," prevents her suicide and brings them together."

Symbols

The rear window.
"Symbol of the basic voyeuristic experience. a means to watch others without being seen. A detached observer of life. And, of course, a symbol of tthe movie experience--the invisible fourth wall experience of viewing a film. Watching a film is like watching life through a window in which the participants can't see you watching them."
"
The binoculars and telephoto lens.
"Symbols of the voyeur--looking from a detached distance. Like the movie camera. Even the simulation of looking through the lens is the film experience of the irised image and of close-ups."
